All For This

Once upon a time, there was a young boy named Amen. His parents were very religious people and in the midst of their praying to God for the baby boy he had given them, the doctor’s needed to know the boy’s name. They asked the boy’s parents, but they didn’t hear him. The doctor thought they had answered him, so in essence; the boy had been named Amen. The parents of the boy didn’t mind all that much, so they kept the name the way it was. They loved the young boy and gave him a good life. Everyone told them how lovely the baby was and how lucky the parents were to get such a lovely baby, so full of life. They were all amazed at how smart the youngster was, already recognizing things and showing understanding. But in their hearts, all of those people weren’t pondering the loveliness of the baby, or wishing they had a child like that. In fact, most of the well-wishers were thinking exactly the opposite, thanking God for not giving them a child like that.

See, the thing is, Amen was born without arms and legs, and his name was the only thing that might give him strength as he struggled to get through life, along with his faith. Amen grew to a ripe old age of 26 before he killed himself. You might ask, how does someone with no arms and no legs commit suicide? Well, to answer your question, he threw himself into the neighborhood pool while no one was around to stop him. He had tried to live a life of faith and love, but he had no hands to bring together in prayer, no legs to bend in supplication to the Lord. Earlier that day, someone had asked him how he was doing. He had been getting that question non-stop since the day he could answer it. He answered that person with this line… “I’m fine, but call me Bob.” The asker looked mighty confused, but the next day, he finally understood what the comment had meant. He never forgave himself for letting his brother commit suicide.
